Grady High School, Georgia

The vegetarian students finally have somewhere to go at Grady High School in Atlanta, GA. Grady High School is now one of the first public schools to offer a strictly vegetarian line every day in the lunch room. It all started when some proactive students from the high school’s Vegetarian Club demanded more veggie options in the lunch room. Their voice was heard.
Today, the vegetarian line serves up to 400 of the school’s 1,200 students, with many non-vegetarians choosing the healthy, fresh options like vegetarian spaghetti, fresh fruit, salads, and beans and rice. (2) The veggie lunch line attracted the attention of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and in 2006 Grady High School was a runner-up for the PCRM’s Golden Carrot Award for healthy school lunches. PCRM commended the school for its variety of vegetarian options, healthy cooking methods, and nutrition education. (1) Because of the Vegetarian Club’s actions, Grady’s school lunch program has received national attention through the PCRM, and the vegetarian students have something to be proud of. They voiced their concern, and now every student has healthier options to choose from.
